If you have a water heater that needs changed out, sure we can help. When most water heaters are in need of replacement, it is under emergency situations. Unfortunately, most people consider changing their system or style of hot water source only after it's to late. Plan your ideal system, before the need for immediate replacement is required. Then when it's time, your ready! Below are some common terminologies that may help you research.
Storage or Tank style water heaters, also known as "flooders" due to many being located in attic spaces on 2nd and 3rd floors here in Houston. There are 3 different fuel types available; natural gas, electric and L.P. gas (if you have L.P., make sure the plumbing company and the plumber doing the work, both have their L.P. endorsement from the Texas Railroad Commission). Recently, the federal government has required manufacturers of gas water heaters to comply with new standards. FVIR or flammable vapor ignition resistant heaters are now standard and prevent serious damage to people and property. Our preferred brand for installation is Bradford White. Watch out for FVIR heaters that have filter/screening on the air inlets, as maintenance is required regularly otherwise the warranty may be void. Life expectancy for a gas tank style water heater is between 8-14 years in our area, but really depends on water quality, and maintenance.
Tankless water heater; A.K.A. "on demand water heaters" are becoming more common place in residential installations in and around Houston.
Be aware that these are sometimes called instantaneous heaters. However, when you turn the faucet on, it will take time for the hot water to advance from the unit, through the pipe system, to the point of use, unless a storage/circulating system has been installed. There are many advantages to a tankless unit; less space required, indoor/outdoor installation, not storing 40-50 gallons of water around valuables, federal tax credit, and of most of all the energy savings. When considering a retro-fit, or upgrade from a tank to tankless unit, many items need to be considered; Vent system (if gas), circuit breaker size, gas supply size, 110v electrical circuit (for circuit board operation), and water quality. We install Noritz brand tankless water heaters whenever possible.
Point of Use water heaters; 2 different types; one is known as a insta hot, and the other is a "booster".
A small capacity unit (1/3 or 1/2 gallon) that is installed at a kitchen sink. They are fantastic when you need to make that quick jug of tea, instant coffee, or if the kids want a quick bowl of noodle soup for lunch. No need to dirty a pot and wait for water to boil, its nearly boiling right out of the faucet. Many custom spout finishes are available to match existing designer faucet finishes. Insinkerator is our premium brand for installation.
The "booster" is quite different, it can either be located in a attic or crawlspace above the point of use and hard piped into the piping system, or maybe installed below a lavatory. These are used frequently when a small amount (5-10 gallons) of hot water may be required at a remote fixture (when it takes a long time for hot water to get the fixture from the water heater).
